Tell us about what you do at Intuitive and how you contribute to its success.
I joined Intuitive in June 2019 as a Commercial Learning senior trainer and earlier this year I was promoted to commercial learning manager. I am honored that Intuitive has continually invested in my development, and I’m proud to be a graduate of Intuitive’s 2022 Management Development Program (MDP).
As part of the Commercial Learning sales training team, I’ve helped train over 250 representatives from our 23 distributors representing over 34 different nations around the world. In 2023 alone, I flew 140,000 miles—approximately the equivalent of 5.5 times around the globe.
I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the best in the business to build and deliver training programs to grow gynecology, thoracic, and colorectal procedures in Latin America and the EU. My training efforts have helped more patients around the world have access to life-enhancing minimally invasive care.
Tell us about your cultural heritage and background.
I am proud to be an immigrant. I was born in Guatemala and came to the Bay Area in California when I was seven. I did not speak English and had to assimilate to a culture different than my own. I remember my early years being reprimanded for speaking Spanish in the classroom. Not having been born in the U.S., I grew up with what was called a Green Card or Permanent Resident Card. This document makes you a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. I joined the U.S. Marine Corps at 17 and deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005 at 19. After my first tour in Iraq, I returned home and was naturalized as a U.S. citizen. I earned many benefits, among the most important gaining the right to vote in national elections and a U.S. passport. I went on to serve a second tour in Iraq and separated from military service with the rank of staff sergeant (E-6).
What is your proudest achievement at Intuitive?
Receiving grateful messages from training participants. To me, it means the patients they helped treat were in great hands! Professionally, the top one would be receiving the Global Commercial Learning Excellence Award in 2023. The award was given for effectively collaborating cross-functionally/regionally, encouraging diversity of thought, and taking action to include others’ perspectives in daily work on key projects. I don’t consider this an individual award but rather validation that the people around me are best in class and elevate me each day to be my best.
What gives you energy or inspiration—inside and outside of work?
Making a difference and human connection. Our technology is changing humanity and the way that we treat diseases. I am proud to be part of the seed that is sprouting to change the world for the better. Human connection drives my inner passion to mentor others and help them be better versions of themselves. It’s not easy to change healthcare, so I’m grateful to and empowered by those willing to take on the responsibility and deliver on the founding principle—patients first, always! Outside of work—family! I would not be where I am without the support of my wife, Lorraine, and my 17-year-old daughter, Rubie. They are my “why.”
What else do you want employees to know about ¡HOLA! and the work members are doing?
Our mission is to foster a supportive community of Hispanic and Latinx professionals where they can bring their authentic selves to work, promote career growth and advancement, and create an environment where leaders can thrive. We strive to empower and uplift our community and become a leading voice for diversity and equity in the workplace.
