Multiport System Design Engineering careers
Join the team that engineers da Vinci, the surgical system that has transformed how surgeons operate and how patients heal.

Come engineer the next chapter of da Vinci.
The da Vinci system didn't arrive fully formed. It was built, iterated, challenged, and rebuilt by Multiport engineers who have been with Intuitive's since its earliest days. That legacy of engineering excellence is what brought us to da Vinci 5; redesigned from the inside out with more than 150 design innovations and 10,000x the computing power of its predecessor. From first concept to system launch, every generation has been shaped by this team. And with your help, the next one will be too.

Where incredible complexity meets purpose-driven collaboration.
From electrical to mechanical engineering, systems analysis to viewer and displays, building da Vinci 5 means solving complex engineering problems. Accuracy, safety, and reliability are non-negotiable. Success here requires curiosity, humility, and the willingness to learn across disciplines. There’s no playbook, no off-the-shelf solution—just a shared commitment to engineering systems that help surgeons care for their patients with confidence.
These are the teams making it happen.

Electrical Engineering
The Electrical Engineering team designs and builds all the electronics that power da Vinci—from printed circuit boards and power architecture to programmable firmware. Nearly every electrical component is customized to meet the reliability, safety, and performance demands of surgical systems. The team is the first piece of the engineering puzzle: It operates at the foundation of product development, collaborating across functions to solve problems under complex constraints like thermal management, supply chain, long-term reliability, and regulatory requirements.

Mechanical Engineering
The Mechanical Engineering team leads the end-to-end mechanical design of Intuitive’s multiport systems. From defining early-stage product needs to prototyping, development, launch, and stabilization, the team owns the full lifecycle of da Vinci. To create robotic systems that are functional and elegant, mechanical engineers work with modern materials and leading-edge components and technology, including motors, transmission, and encoders. This team collaborates across functions, navigating unique design challenges in robotics, and lead workstreams for each subsystem. MEs working on these systems—with thousands of distinct parts—requires both technical rigor and true empathy for the people who use them.

Systems Analysis
The Systems Analysis team develops the real-time control algorithms that run da Vinci. They turn mathematical theory into precision control for users—surgeons affecting millions of patients every year. Specializing in motion control, SAs collaborate closely with Intuitive’s Clinical Affairs and Human Factors teams to ensure they’re building systems with the surgeon in mind. It’s deeply technical work grounded in control theory, robotics, and reliability. SAs are often called in to solve the hardest problems, especially when something critical needs urgent answers.

Viewer and Displays
The Viewer and Displays team focuses on one of the most technically demanding aspects of surgical robotics: delivering the highest quality 3D color imagery to surgeons. Their work centers on optical systems and display technologies that must meet an extremely high standard to ensure precision, safety, and surgeon comfort. Tackling complex challenges in optics, lens design, and image delivery, the team maintains Intuitive’s industry-leading standards—and enables the surgeon to see everything they’re doing with accuracy and ease.

Ready to do the most challenging and rewarding engineering work of your career?
“To do right by the surgeons using our technology, we have to be constantly innovating, constantly thinking, 'what's next?' What's the user experience going to be? How do we make this better?”
Mechanical Engineer
“Folks approach problems with kindness and collaboration. There's not a lot of huge egos. Everyone is focused solutions—they're focused on advancing the mission.”
Senior Electrical Engineer
“We approach problems from first principles. You can really invest the time and energy that you need to understand what the problem is and then figure out how to address it. It's the best kind of engineering: You have all the tools you need. The only limits to what you do are what you set for yourself.”
Principal Optical Engineer
“To be successful on this team, you have to be eager to learn. Expect difficult technical challenges, which are also exciting opportunities for growth. We're always innovating—and you'll have the chance to directly contribute to that.”

Meet Pushkar
Senior Director, Multiport Design Engineering, Pushkar Hingwe joined Intuitive 17 years ago as a motion control engineer. Now, he leads the team building Intuitive’s multiport system.
“The challenge we face every day—whether we’re designing a mechanical part or an electrical board or a motion control algorithm or the vision system—is to deliver such a complex system to a level of proficiency and integration that it all appears seamless and smooth to people using it to deliver care,” Pushkar says. “It takes a huge amount of skill—and it takes grit.”
