Company Description
It started with a simple idea: what if surgery could be less invasive and recovery less painful? Nearly 30 years later, that question still fuels everything we do at Intuitive. As a global leader in robotic-assisted surgery and minimally invasive care, our technologies—like the da Vinci surgical system and Ion—have transformed how care is delivered for millions of patients worldwide.
We’re a team of engineers, clinicians, and innovators united by one purpose: to make surgery smarter, safer, and more human. Every day, our work helps care teams perform with greater precision and patients recover faster, improving outcomes around the world.
The problems we solve demand creativity, rigor, and collaboration. The work is challenging, but deeply meaningful—because every improvement we make has the potential to change a life.
If you’re ready to contribute to something bigger than yourself and help transform the future of healthcare, you’ll find your purpose here.
Job Description
Primary Function of Position
We are seeking a Medical Image Annotation Supervisor to support Ion’s Machine Learning Engineering team. In this role, you will oversee a team of annotation technicians working with CT, MRI, ultrasound, and bronchoscopy images to support the development of state-of-the-art image-guided robotic systems. You will create high-quality ground truth datasets for medical imaging algorithms using manual and semi-automated segmentation tools while also ensuring the team meets its quality and productivity goals.
This role requires strong attention to detail, a focus on accuracy and consistency, and the ability to coordinate as the primary point of contact for the annotation team. The ideal candidate brings several years of hands-on experience in medical imaging or data annotation, and is ready to take the next step into a supervisory capacity. Formal people management experience is not required, but a demonstrated ability to communicate with, guide, support, and quality-check the work of peers is essential.
As a bilingual supervisor based in Mexicali, you will play a critical role in bridging communication between the local annotation team and U.S.-based engineering stakeholders. You must be comfortable working in both English and Spanish across written documentation, verbal communication, and technical instruction. Occasional travel to U.S. facilities will be required for training sessions, meetings, and cross-site collaboration, and candidates must hold a valid passport and U.S. visa or be eligible and willing to obtain one prior to the start date.
Essential Job Duties
The Medical Image Annotation Supervisor plays a central role in ensuring the quality, consistency, and timely delivery of annotated medical imaging datasets that directly support the development of Ion's image-guided robotic systems. This position bridges the gap between hands-on annotation work and team coordination, requiring an individual who is equally comfortable performing complex segmentation tasks and guiding others to do the same.
Team Coordination
· Coordinate and oversee daily annotation activities across the team, including task assignment, progress tracking, and deadline management
· Maintain and update project tracking tools to provide accurate, real-time visibility into team capacity and output
· Identify workflow inefficiencies and implement process improvements to optimize team productivity
· Facilitate daily or weekly team check-ins to surface blockers, align on priorities, and communicate updates from stakeholders
· Identify quality issues and escalate, ensure quality improvements are implemented
· Onboard new team members by supporting as appropriate
· Support scheduling and coverage planning to ensure consistent team availability during high-demand periods
Annotation
· Perform manual and semi-automated segmentation of anatomical structures in medical images
· Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistent, high-quality annotations
· Conduct self-review and quality checks on completed work
· Document workflows, issues, and edge cases clearly
· Collaborate with engineers and clinical experts to refine annotation guidelines
Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience
To qualify for this position, you must have:
• Full professional fluency in Spanish and English (spoken and written); ability to translate technical and clinical annotation guidelines between languages
• 2+ years of previous experience in a supervisor role
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality, consistent output
• Ability to follow structured workflows and repeat processes at scale
• Strong communication and documentation skills
• Comfort working extensively with software tools and computer-based tasks
• Reliable, disciplined work ethic
Preferred Skills and Experience:
Ideally, a candidate would also have:
· Previous team management experience
· Experience with medical imaging software (e.g., 3D Slicer, ITK-SNAP, OsiriX, etc.)
· Basic understanding of human anatomy
· Familiarity with DICOM data and imaging concepts
· Prior experience in data annotation, QA, or regulated environments
Preferred Educational Background:
Radiology Technician
