Job Description

Primary Function of the Position

The New Product Verification team at Intuitive is devoted to assuring safe, reliable, and effective products that exceed patient, surgeon, and hospital expectations. The department plays a vital role in product and process quality, in new product development and production, and in the quality of da Vinci and Ion System product lines, including diagnostic systems, instrumentation, and supporting accessories. The Senior Manager of Test Engineering will manage a team of test engineers and engineering technician(s). Working shoulder to shoulder with the team and leading change, the senior manager will be critical to product development deliverables, talent development, and process improvement within New Product Verification.

Essential Job Duties

Team and Cross-functional Leadership

  • Manage a team of test engineers and engineering technicians with mechanical, electrical, biomedical and other applied science backgrounds.
  • Train and develop existing team members on technical and soft skills.
  • Ensure team members are motivated, engaged and enthusiastic.
  • Establish group priorities, metrics and personal work goals consistent with overall product development schedules and/or process improvement milestones for the team.
  • Assign tasks, set priorities, and track progress.
  • Execute resource management and control for planning, staffing, budgeting, and team cost tracking.
  • Prioritize and negotiate project and resourcing tradeoffs with project managers, engineering managers, and lab resources.
  • Influence cross-functional project teams in the design, development, verification, and validation of new products with complex functionality.
  • Form and maintain effective partnerships with cross functional partners in parallel organizations.
  • Provide vision for the test engineering team and foster an environment that encourages creativity and crisp execution.
  • Promote best practices for verification

Technical Work Execution

  • Support team with generation of test plans, protocols and reports for Design Verification and Life/Reliability tests, working with and through the team of test engineers.
  • Guide the team with translating complex product requirements to testable acceptance criteria.
  • Apply critical thinking and provide technical support during failure analysis and test failures.
  • Identify and develop processes, test methods, and test fixtures that could benefit from new or updated fixture designs to drive operational efficiencies; drive and execute changes.
  • Guide the team to develop harmonized test methods and on test method validation strategy as required.

Other Responsibilities

  • Functional & Technical leadership when collaborating with the cross functional/matrixed teams.
  • Effective communication across various levels of the organization at core team meetings, product review board and design reviews.
  • Ensures successful, on-time completion of department and core team projects; communicates constraints and recommends preferred mitigation to direct management when successful project completion is at risk.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience Technical Skills:

  • Ability to perform mechanical engineering calculations needed to support equipment design, including dimensional analysis.
  • Experience using tools and measuring equipment (Force Gauge, Calipers, Instron, Oscilloscopes etc.).
  • Experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD software preferred.
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python is highly preferred.
  • Experience working with electro-mechanical systems is a plus.

Commitment:

  • Must be available to work full-time and commute/relocate to Sunnyvale, CA
  • Ability to travel (<10%) as needed to support programs at other facilities.

Required Education and Training:

  • At least 10+ years’ experience working in an engineering organization. Prefer, experience within medical device or pharmaceutical industry.
  • Minimum 4+ years as a people manager, or equivalent project/team leadership, with proven ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Minimum BS in Mechanical, Biomedical Engineering or similar degree. MS preferred.
  • Medical Device Verification/Validation experience is required.
  • Understanding of design controls used in the medical device development is required.
  • Experience with working on through various phases of medical device product development process (concept through launch) is required.
  • Test Method Validation experience is preferred.

Working Conditions

  • The employee will spend time at their desk in front of the computer as well as work in a lab environment.
  • Lab environment will have exposure to animal blood and tissue; there will also be exposure to detergents and other chemicals used for reprocessing medical devices.
  • Hands on testing includes but not limited to using the robotic systems, mechanical test fixtures, microscopes, electrical test fixtures etc.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python, Arduino is highly preferred.
  • Experience working with electro-mechanical systems is a plus.

Base Salary Range Region 1: $185,800 USD - $278,800 USD
Base Salary Range Region 2: $158,000 USD - $237,000 USD
Shift: Day
Travel: 10% of the time
Workplace Type: Set Schedule - This job will be onsite weekly, the percentage of onsite work will be defined by the leader.
