Description of Position:

The Advanced Research group within Intuitive Surgical has an immediate opening in Sunnyvale, CA for an engineer with a focus on Mechanical Design, contributing to the exploration of a novel system concept for a new application of surgical robotics. This role is an exciting opportunity to join a small and innovative team in the very early phases of product development.

The Mechanical Engineer will develop robotically-controlled catheters for a novel clinical application. The successful candidate will have both the technical depth to resolve complex mechanical, materials and manufacturing design issues and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team to troubleshoot to root cause higher level system issues. They must excel in a high-energy, focused, small-team environment, and have a commitment to high quality prototypes and concepts. A strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward is required as well as a commitment to high product quality.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Work in a small, cross-functional project team to design, develop and verify new concepts for catheters and other flexible surgical instruments
  • Research and review literature and prior art to inform design decisions and architectures
  • Observe clinical cases and participate in interviews with clinical experts to inform designs
  • Develop, implement, test and document new solutions, processes and designs according to corporate standards and departmental operating procedures
  • Design and develop fixturing to aid in testing and/or assembly of instruments
  • Perform tests, critically analyze results and make design changes or recommendations to the design team
  • Investigate and determine root cause of emerging design, manufacturing or material defects
  • Provide support for pre-clinical and clinical labs
  • Establish individual goals consistent with overall project goals


Skills/Job Requirements:

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or related engineering or scientific discipline, or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum 5 years of experience developing commercial medical products
  • Demonstrated ability to work in cross-functional research and development teams; experience with plastics, plastics molding, testing, process equipment, adhesives, and/or disposable medical products are a strong plus
  • Experience with electronics and software; course work or experience with mechatronics a plus
  • Proficiency using CAD to design and document mechanisms; SolidWorks preferred
  • Familiar with all phases of the product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debug, verification, qualification, and transfer
  • Knowledge of component manufacturing processes
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time
