Joining Intuitive Surgical means joining a team dedicated to using technology to benefit patients by improving surgical efficacy and decreasing surgical invasiveness, with patient outcomes as our highest priority.

The Advanced Research group within Intuitive Surgical has an immediate opening in Sunnyvale, CA for an engineer with a focus on Mechanical Design, contributing to the exploration of a novel system concept for a new application of surgical robotics. This role is an exciting opportunity to join a small and innovative team in the very early phases of product development.

The successful candidate will have both the technical depth to resolve complex mechanical, materials and systems design issues and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team to explore, prototype, test, and iterate novel mechanisms. They must excel in a high-energy, focused, small-team environment, and have a commitment to high quality prototypes and concepts. A strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward is required.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Work in a small, cross-functional project team to design, develop and test novel robotic systems and instruments
  • Research and review literature and prior art (both internal and external to the company) to inform design decisions and architectures
  • Observe clinical cases and participate in interviews with clinical experts to inform designs
  • Develop, implement, test and document new solutions, processes and designs according to corporate standards and departmental operating procedures
  • Design and develop fixturing to aid in testing and/or assembly of instruments
  • Perform tests, critically analyze results and make design changes or recommendations to the design team
  • Investigate and determine root cause of emerging design, manufacturing or material defects
  • Provide support for pre-clinical and clinical labs
  • Establish individual goals consistent with overall project goals

Skills/Job Requirements:

  • BS or MS in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or related engineering or scientific discipline required, or equivalent work experience
  • A minimum of 6 years’ experience developing commercial products; an advanced degree may substitute for this experience requirement
  • Experience with articulated and flexible mechanisms, plastics, injection molding, and/or disposable medical products are a strong plus
  • Demonstrated ability to work in cross-functional research and development teams to design and develop complex robotic systems
  • Proficiency using CAD to design and document mechanisms; SolidWorks preferred
  • Knowledge of component manufacturing processes
  • Experience with sensors, and data analysis of sensor data with relation to physical properties. Strong analytical skills and experience are essential
  • Familiar with all phases of the product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debug, verification, qualification, and transfer
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time
