Primary Function of Position:

As a member of the Global Public Affairs (GPA) team, you will contribute to all facets of the team’s campaigns including: providing public affairs and media relations assistance; development of draft messaging and materials for a variety of internal and external audiences within and across the countries that Intuitive serves. Drive media relations best practices and message discipline and consistency; provide assistance in campaign planning and execution and with ongoing stakeholder engagement and management and serve as a key member of the Global Public Affairs team.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The purpose of the Public Affairs Manager is to support the advancement of Intuitive Surgical’s global public affairs strategy and successful execution of the goals of the global public affairs team. The position is located Sunnyvale. Specific responsibilities include:

Public Affairs

• Assist in the development and strong execution of country-specific public affairs strategies, campaigns, and projects.
• Provide organizational assistance in assuring that the department’s individual activities, messages, and materials support the achievement of broader public affairs, country-specific, and company-wide goals and policy objectives.
• Draft, edit, review and revise strategic and project-specific messaging and materials (talking points, press & audience-specific statements, FAQs, presentations, etc.)
• Drive consistency of message and media relations best practices across markets to ensure public-facing and target audience materials consistently reflect corporate public affairs messaging, discipline, and consistency.
• Liaise with public affairs teams and political/public affairs, market access and reimbursement consultants/team members in the US and other markets.
• Develop and maintain key campaign & media relations trackers, databases and other tools to assess progress on individual, team and country-specific goals.
• Help to build global public affairs capacity and ensure messaging consistency as the company expands
• Ability to clearly synthesize, and integrate complex issues in messaging & media documents and in communications with key internal and external audiences
• Attend meetings/conferences to provide public affairs support as needed.

Writing and Editing 

• Superior writing and editing skills – common usage in: media & policy oriented messaging, quotes, talking points, decks and reports.
• Very strong attention to detail.
• Rapid response: ability to quickly draft and revise materials.
• Ability to synthesize ideas into materials.

Market Knowledge

• Previous experience in healthcare, technology or a regulated industry.
• Previous experience in an international/multi-country capacity.
• Competence in/knowledge of policy, public affairs, political or issue campaigns and media relations.
• Understand or willingness to learn and quickly absorb key industry issues relating to products, product categories, technologies, primary and potential competition and general issues facing the medical device industry.

Skill/Job Requirements:

Competency Requirements: (Competency is based on: education, training, skills and experience.) In order to adequately perform the responsibilities of this position the individual must have: 

• 7 to 10 years of experience in strategic public affairs and media relations and/or campaign work.
• Excellent organizational skills, especially ability to monitor and manage multiple campaigns and media relations programs, along with tracks of work in several countries simultaneously, while ensuring all are consistent with the company’s overarching goals, approach, and corporate reputation.
• Excellent communication skills, especially ability to express key points concisely and clearly.
• Ability to work independently yet in coordination with – and across - teams in multiple countries.
• Ability to tailor materials to effectively communicate with multiple internal and external audiences, including colleagues in different departments and countries, different high-value external stakeholders, and media.
• Experience juggling multiple projects and deadlines in multiple time zones.
• Responsive and focused on executing in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience in a global corporate environment.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• Previous experience in a corporate public affairs department or political or policy-oriented campaigns.
• BA or BS degree required.
