Job Description

Primary Function of Position

The Clinical Development Engineering team at Intuitive Surgical holds a unique position within product development by identifying clinical value through enabling the safe, effective, and reliable use of surgical robotic platforms and their components.

The Clinical Development Engineering Manager (Post Market) will lead a team of Clinical Development Engineers (Post Market) who use their in-depth knowledge of robotic systems, instruments and accessories and clinical applications to investigate, understand, and address opportunities with products in the field. The Clinical Development Engineering - Post Market team also works with failure analysis/design engineers and clinicians to define, develop, and validate the clinical function of product improvements within our surgical robotic system platforms. They investigate and refine products including robotic systems, visualization platforms, instruments and accessories that ultimately improve the clinical outcome for patients. Their primary focus is to ensure clinical requirements are met, risks are understood and characterized, and validate that the products address them. They will also investigate opportunities for product, clinical application, and process improvements based on clinical use experiences.

The Clinical Development Engineering Manager (Post Market) provides leadership by thinking broadly, working cross-functionally, supporting collaboratively, and building strong empowering foundations.  Additionally, they recruit, develop, inspire, engage and retain high performing clinical engineers.

Essential Job Duties

  • Post Market/Sustaining Engineering
    • Manage resources and workload of the Clinical Development Engineering - Post Market team across engineering projects and investigation
    • Cultivate and maintain cross-functional relationships on behalf of the Clinical Development Engineering - Post Market team, driving synergies and developing efficiencies with other groups including new product development, regulatory, quality, marketing, human factors, training, and sales
    • Advocate for and develop the role of Clinical Development Engineering - Post Market to best contribute to the company mission
    • Create and improve Clinical Development Engineering - Post Market processes to promote contribution efficiency and improve product performance using available resources
    • Support and sometimes manage clinical evaluation of enhanced products at key customer sites
    • Identify potential product enhancements & new product ideas by applying an analytical approach to understanding the clinical needs of surgeons
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of clinical applications of Intuitive products, and transfer clinical product knowledge from new product development to the Post-Market space, including regulatory surveillance, failure analysis engineering, and training.

      • Establish sub-team objectives and goals consistent with company and product development goals
      • Facilitates priority alignment, reviews metrics and tracks progress
      • Assesses employee performance and provides coaching
      • Influences and builds bridges across teams to improve communication and processes; keeps team on target and collaborates with functional leadership to resolve conflicts quickly
      • Seeks, recognizes, and executes creative and simple solutions to resolve complex situations; routinely steadies the team when stressed; leads by example

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 8+ years of experience in medical device product development (surgical devices preferred)

Required Education and Training

  • Minimum Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or equivalent, advanced degree preferred
  • A leader who is a consistent high performer, a continual learner, and leads with emotional intelligence
  • A team player.
  • Self-starter with ability to take leadership in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience working in Risk Management specifically in ISO 14971
  • Experience interacting with surgeons and their teams in an operating room environment with recognized clinical credibility and surgical acumen
  • Aptitude to cultivate collaboration across Key Opinion Leaders and influence cross-functional teams without formal authority to ensure project success
  • Proven success in recognizing critical issues with the ability to react quickly under pressure and driving issues to closure by providing coordinated direction. Creative in succeeding.
  • Strong project management, planning, decision making, negotiating skills
  • Excellent communication (written, verbal), presentation and documentation skills

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Current or previous experience as an Intuitive Clinical Development Engineer
  • Experience managing direct reports is a plus.
  • Scrub experience, cadaveric and animal surgical experience a plus

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, benefits, and equity. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications. The target salary ranges are listed.

Base Salary Range Region 1: $178,800 USD - $257,200 USD
Base Salary Range Region 2: $151,900 USD - $218,700 USD
Shift: Day
Travel: 25% of the time
Workplace Type: Set Schedule - This job will be onsite weekly, the percentage of onsite work will be defined by the leader.
