Job Description

Primary Function of Position

  • Responsible for procuring materials, components, and equipment and for project materials management in support of NPI (New Products Introduction) builds.  Gathers quotations, understands key supplier capabilities, and matches those capabilities to new designs and project schedules.  Tracks and updates orders, delivery commitments and inventory receipts both inside and outside of MRP.  Ensures adequate supply in place for production ramp-up of new products.  Collaborates with cross-functional Supply Chain team members to ensure effective new product release to production purchasing.
  • Determines material requirements from engineering and New Product build schedules and maintains inventory at planned levels.  Evaluates supplier reliability and works with Supplier Engineering and Supply Chain Management to develop new supply sources as needed.  Monitors cost, schedule, and scope of assigned NPI projects.  Leverages enterprise tools and systems to drive continuous improvement and enhance the performance of the NPI function.

Essential Job Duties

  • Utilize forecast and planning techniques to ensure optimal inventory levels of purchased material is maintained to meet engineering and production ramp-up requirements.
  • Apply new product introduction/R&D purchasing experience to minimize material lead times and ensure on time delivery of material to support NPI project schedules.
  • Work with engineering to assist suppliers in developing efficient fabrication processes.
  • Identify alternate sources of supply for critical components as required.
  • Participate in the continuous improvement of current systems and processes.
  • Work with cross-functional Supply Chain team to identify and qualify new suppliers.
  • Identify potential supplier capacity issues to Supply Chain Management and support/execute capacity risk mitigation activities.
  • Work with cross-functional Supply Chain team members to resolve these issues and to ensure no impact on project schedules.
  • Create, assist, update, and publish project material cost-models at each phase of the NPI project.
  • Establish best practices (as digital as few), process creation.
  • Quickly and proactively resolve and/or escalate issues related to delivery, supplier performance, quality or cost.
  • Ensure and maintain accuracy of all applicable reports, PO’s, component item master information, etc. 
  • Work with engineering and production control to ensure BOMs are accurate and will function in a production environment.
  • Understanding of the Product Development Phase-gates and corresponding supply-readiness deliverables: cost, supply continuity, supply chain risk management, new supplier assessment/evaluation.
  • Coordinates engineering change order activity with suppliers and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to navigate gray areas.
  • Be a functional, productive member of a high-performance team.


Required Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of 8+ years of purchasing experience in a regulated industry manufacturing environment (medical device preferred), of which at least 2 years in direct materials purchasing in New Product Introduction (NPI), R&D, Manufacturing and/or engineering support environments with a demonstrated successful track record of increasing responsibility.
  • Certifications: CPSM, CPIM, and/or PMP is a plus.
  • Significant computer experience including MS Office products and ERP systems, preferably SAP and Agile. Strong MS-Excel skills.

Required Education and Training:

  • BS degree or equivalent.
  • Certifications: CPSM, CPIM, and/or PMP is a plus.

Working Conditions:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to be independently mobile. The employee is also required to interact with a computer, and communicate with peers and co-workers.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Working knowledge of buying, material planning, master scheduling, and forecasting.
  • Proven track record of effective project management in a fast-paced manufacturing company.
  • Demonstrates concern for precision and thoroughness, ability to proactively follow-up on areas of responsibility in a timely manner.
  • Experience working with engineers and manufacturing resources for prototype parts procurement, pilot activities and production launch of new products.
  • Ability to enjoy and work effectively in a fast paced, chaotic environment of constant change.
  • Ability to manage change quickly and gracefully.
  • Experience with and a functional understanding of the manufacturing processes utilized by the suppliers of either mechanical components (precision machining, sheet metal, plastic injection molding and other plastics processes) or contract manufacturing, OEM or electro-mechanical cables or electronic components (PCA/PCBA /Optics, etc)
  • Proven track record of effective with project management techniques for new product introduction.
  • Strong negotiation skills and experience with proven track record of savings.
  • Read and have a basic understanding of engineering drawings.
  • Basic understanding of data visualization tools (similar to Tableau, Power BI etc.,) is a plus
  • Experience working within: cGMP or ISO13485 or a regulated manufacturing environment is a plus.
  • Proven ability to consistently achieve stretch goals and objectives.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, benefits, and equity. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications. The target salary ranges are listed.

Base Salary Range Region 1: $133,700 USD - $192,300 USD
Base Salary Range Region 2: $113,700 USD - $163,500 USD
Shift: Day
Travel: 50% of the time
Workplace Type: Set Schedule - This job will be onsite weekly, the percentage of onsite work will be defined by the leader.
