Job Description

Primary function of the position:

The Design Engineer will develop and support innovative surgical devices and accessories for the da Vinci Surgical System, from concept to launch and beyond, with shared responsibility and shared reward. The successful candidate will understand user needs and requirements, balance individual product-level requirements with system-level requirements, resolve mechanical design issues, and commit to the highest product quality.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The Design Engineer serves on cross-functional program teams to develop new, world-class surgical devices and accessories:

  • Translates clinical requirements and user needs to functional and technical specifications.
  • Develops, implements, tests, and documents solutions that meet clinical requirements.
  • Works within multi-disciplinary, international teams to define requirements for new and current designs.
  • Performs risk analyses; develops design requirements; reduces to practice, documents, and tests designs according to corporate standard and department operating procedures, including stringent Design Control activities.
  • Creates and maintains engineering drawings to company and international drafting standards.
  • Tests designs according to corporate standard and department operating procedures.
  • Creates intellectual property by brainstorming novel concepts, writing invention disclosures, and creating rapid prototypes.
  • Performs technical design reviews and present technical details to cross-departmental group.
  • Shows an independent and efficient work style, versatility, and flexibility.
  • Works in compliance with the current QMS, DOPs and SOPs and safety regulations.
  • Collaborates on determination of future product release content with all relevant departments.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • M.Eng. / M.Sc. with at least three years of industry experience preferably in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering, B.Eng. / B.Sc. with at least five years of industry experience.
  • Passionate for solving tough technical problems and creating elegant and reliable products.
  • Hands-on engineering with the proven ability to work well in an international team environment, including team members in remote locations.
  • Able to communicate effectively and accurately across all levels of the organization, including presenting to technical audience.
  • Demonstrated strength in mechanical design and analytical methods. Familiarity with statistics and design of experiments and stress analysis (FEA) is a plus.
  • Experience creating mock-ups and evaluating designs via testing and rigorous mathematical analysis.
  • Proficiency using CAD to design parts and assemblies; SolidWorks preferred.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, such as injection molding, thermoforming, machining, plating, heat treatment, pad printing, laser marking, laser welding, ultrasonic welding, heat staking, etc. preferred.
  • Experience with UL, CE, and/or FDA requirements preferred.
  • Experience designing for reliability and manufacturability.
  • Experience with sterilization processes and designing for biocompatibility preferred.
  • Good written and spoken German language skills.
  • Good Technical English skills (spoken and written).
  • Willingness to international travel up to 10%.
