Job Description

Primary Function of Position:

  • Manage core operational responsibilities (i.e. material master data maintenance, material planning, purchase order issuance and management) for the department.
  • Manage plant procurement for direct and indirect materials to support Operations
  • Drive internal adoption to and compliance with established procurement policies and processes, and development of scalable business systems.
  • Engagement with Strategic Sourcing to support of supplier identification and development efforts, analysis of business proposals, contract negotiations, supplier database management and supplier business reviews / performance scorecard programs.
  • Assist in driving key procurement initiatives to support ongoing business goals and continuous improvement of systems and processes in the procurement organization along with other projects as directed by management.

Roles and Responsibilities:


  • Creates and supports direct reports to maintain consistency in quality and quantity of work output, which is consistent with established processes and controls
  • Responsible for ensuring direct reports are adequately trained and meet all compliance requirements for employee training
  • Develops and manages department budget and allocates resources appropriately to achieve departmental objectives and balance department workload
  • Responsible for performance management of direct reports; including annual appraisals

Supplier management

  • Establish and ensure suppliers meet operational and project performance objectives
  • Effectively engages and may lead specific supplier business reviews
  • Supports development of supplier strategies to meet Company performance and growth
  • Supports (or lead where required) supplier forecast and performance reviews to support supply planning and buffer demand volatility
  • Tracks line down occurrences and performs root cause analysis
  • Implements corrective actions to remove supply chain risk

Cost and contracting

  • Completes annual review of material costs to support standard cost setting processes
  • Supports execution of cost reduction plans to achieve Corporate or department performance goals where required
  • Supports (and may lead) implementation of business and quality agreements with selected suppliers to secure expectations for delivery, quality, cost and other obligations of the business relationship

Inventory management

  • Implement inventory management techniques (Kanban) to increase raw material inventory turns performance
  • Reviews and performs analysis of inventory performance; works to reduce or disposition excess stock where required
  • Responsible for supporting and coordinating inputs to excess and obsolescence reviews

Business systems

  • Manages productivity and efficiency of buyers; works to reduce/eliminate administrative tasks with improved leverage of core business systems. 
  • Develops and drives improvement of reports, tools and systems that are appliable to purchasing.
  • May support workflow development and testing of new systems and system enhancements


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent plus 5+ years of professional experience managing a purchasing team in high and low volume-manufacturing environment (medical device industry preferred). Significant new product introduction experience is a plus.
  • Significant computer experience including MS Office products and ERP systems, preferably SAP and Agile. Strong Excel and PowerPoint experience/use skills.
  • Ability to develop, implement and effectively communicate on topics that support business needs for both short- and long-term time horizons
  • Proven track record effectively managing organization change and strategic projects in a fast paced, high volume manufacturing company.
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience working with Kanban systems and other lean principles.
  • Detailed working knowledge of direct materials buying, planning, master scheduling and forecasting.
  • Demonstrates concern for precision and thoroughness.
  • Proven ability to lead a team to consistently achieve stretch goals and objectives.
  • Ability to provide positive direction by encouraging peers to have a commitment to high standards of quality and performance.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects successfully.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in German and English.
  • Effectively manages task breakdown, helps keep individual contributors on task, player-coach; ability to step in and perform hard tasks.
  • Strong negotiation skills and experience
  • Ability to balance and perform successfully within Corporate and business structure that defines
    strategy, policies and processes, which are then executed at a plant or site level across varying
  • ~20% travel to both domestic and international operating sites or suppliers
