Job Description
Primary Function of Position:
Within the Advanced Imaging and Intelligence group (AI&I), the Advanced Imaging team develops novel imaging capabilities to help surgeons see what they need to see (https://www.intuitive.com/en-us/about-us/newsroom/helping-robotic-surgeons-see). The intern will report to the Director of Advanced Imaging and be mentored by a Principal Engineer within AI&I.
The main responsibility of this position is to create real time imaging pipeline infrastructure using a combination of MATLAB (makes it easy to develop, configure and modify pipelines) and CUDA (allows real-time performance). This allows testing and developing new imaging modalities that will enable improved surgeries.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Our prototype real-time pipelines enable new imaging capabilities while allowing simplified development with improved performance by combining scripting languages with CUDA.
We seek a candidate with strong software development and integration skills to interface our easily configurable MATLAB image processing stages to new CUDA functions for real-time processing and display. The work requires developing, debugging, and testing using both CUDA/C++ and MATLAB. As an intern, you should be able to:
- Define software interfaces between the MATLAB and CUDA components
- Write a specified pipeline by implementing MATLAB and CUDA code
- Write tools for testing pipeline operation
- Write tools to compile necessary components
- Write examples and documentation for other users desiring to create their own imaging pipelines
Qualifications
University Hiring Program Eligibility Requirements:
- University Enrollment: Must be currently enrolled in and returning to an accredited degree-seeking academic program in the Fall.
- Internship Work Period: Must be available to work full-time (approximately 40 hours per week) during a 10-12 week period starting May or June. Specific start dates are shared during the recruiting process.
Skills, Experience, Education, & Training:
- Current enrollment in a Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, or related degree-seeking program at the Doctorate level. Master’s level students with relevant experience are also very welcome to apply.
- Be able to read and understand complex software that involves both MATLAB and CUDA components.
- Proficient with CUDA/C++
- Proficient with MATLAB
- Python knowledge a plus
- Able to develop both on Linux and Windows
- Experienced in building complex software systems
- Able to communicate designs, approaches and ideas well, while accomplishing the goals of the project.

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay (paid at an hourly rate), benefits, and a housing allowance. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including relevant skills and experience for this internship, degree-seeking academic program (PhD, Master’s, Bachelor’s, etc), year in school, and location. The hourly rate is prorated against the intern program salaries listed and total program compensation will be based on internship duration.
Base Salary Range Region 1: $137,800 - $155,000
Base Salary Range Region 2: $117,100 - $131,800
