Job Description

Primary Function of Position:

Intuitive Surgical designs and manufactures highly complex robotic systems for use in minimally invasive surgical applications. Our systems engineering team is committed to utilizing cutting-edge research and technology to develop innovative design solutions for our current and next generation surgical robot systems.

We are seeking a candidate with exceptional machine design and analytical skills to maintain and improve the design, production, and service of the da Vinci® Surgical System. As a Staff Mechanical Engineer, your role is to utilize creativity and sound engineering judgment, as well as rigorous design analysis in the design of surgical robotics products.  You should be capable of performing root cause analysis of complex problems with electro-mechanical components, manufacturing process and system performance.  You will be responsible for identifying mechanical design and manufacturing process solutions to improve performance, cost, and reliability, and performing the development, documentation, verification and implementation of these solutions.  You will be expected to excel in a focused, high-energy, collaborative work environment with a team of talented engineers.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Work with or lead cross-functional project teams to design, develop, and verify new product design or modifications to robotic or other complex mechanisms.

  • Develop world-class designs that meet performance, reliability, manufacturability and cost targets.
  • Evaluate designs via prototype testing and rigorous mathematical analysis.
  • Investigate and determine root cause of both latent and emerging design, manufacturing, or material defects.
  • Develop, design, test, document, and implement solutions for these defects according to corporate standard and departmental operating procedures.
  • Design components and produce mechanical drawings in a government regulated environment for volume manufacturing processes, which may include cast metal, injection molded plastic, sheet metal stamped, and others.
  • Work with supplier engineering to identify, develop, and implement alternate part fabrication methods and sources to reduce hardware cost and/or improve strength of supply chain.
  • Develop and execute design verification/validation test protocols and document results in test reports.
  • Provide mechanical engineering support for resolution of field and manufacturing issues.
  • Support product risk assessments, Corrective and Preventive Actions, and quality/regulatory audits as required.
  • Provide advice, mentoring, and guidance to advance the technical and business expertise of colleagues.
  • Identify and implement best practices between teams and engineering departments.
  • Establish individual and team goals consistent with overall project goals.

Qualifications

Skills, Experience, Education, & Training:

  • Self-driven with the ability to excel in a high-energy, small, focused team environment, to maintain a strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward, and to make work fun and interesting.
  • Proven ability to identify issues, bring clarity and transparency, and to lead a team effectively to appropriate product solutions, backed up with solid engineering work
  • Ability to develop complex mechanical designs and convey them simply and clearly to others using basic engineering concepts
  • Comfortable with all phases of the product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debug, verification, qualification, and transfer to Manufacturing.
  • Understand concepts of design input, design output, requirement traceability, and FMEA risk analysis
  • Technical expertise with mechanism design, robotics and/or medical products
  • Design, manufacture and troubleshooting of electromechanical components and precision mechanical components
  • Mechanical design and analysis skills, including statics, dynamics, kinematics, strength of materials and stress analysis (FEA); familiarity with statistics and design of experiments
  • Proficiency at failure analysis
  • Fluency in ASME Y14.5 GD&T and tolerance stack analysis.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a wide variety of manufacturing processes, including high-volume fabrication methods such as plastic injection molding, metal-injection molding, stamping, aluminum and steel casting (sand, investment, die).
  • Experience with Statistical Process Control in a production environment
  • Proficiency using CAD to design parts and assemblies and to create specification drawings in a PDM environment; Solidworks preferred.
  • Comfortable using Matlab, Python, SQL, or similar software, and able to learn new software or equipment quickly and thoroughly.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written, oral) across all levels and organizations.
  • Ability to mentor other engineers.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% time.
  • Minimum 8 years of industry experience designing commercial mechanical products with a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar technical field, or minimum 12 years of industry experience with a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Ideally 4+ years of medical design experience
  • Experience providing inputs to regulatory agency approval including UL, CE and FDA is a plus.
  • A real excitement to learn and get to the bottom of tough technical problems.
  • Passion for solving difficult technical challenges, and desire to share answers with the extended team.
