Job Description
Primary Function of Position
As the Senior Director - Tax Operations, you will lead and oversee all aspects of Intuitive Surgical’ s tax compliance and tax provision processes, including foreign income tax and transfer pricing. Reporting to the Vice President of Tax & Trade, you will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with U.S. and international tax regulations and US GAAP reporting requirements and supporting the company’s financial objectives. This leadership position requires a strategic thinker with exceptional management skills, and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally to drive operational excellence in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
Essential Job Duties
Roles and Responsibilities
- Tax Compliance Oversight: Manage and oversee the process and co-sourcing relationship with outside providers in relation to the preparation and review of U.S. federal, state, and international tax returns, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with all applicable tax laws and regulations.
- Tax Provision Leadership: Lead the preparation and review of quarterly and annual tax provisions under ASC 740, including coordination with finance and accounting teams to ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Transfer Pricing Operations: Oversee global transfer pricing execution, documentation, and intercompany transactions, ensuring alignment with OECD guidelines and local country requirements (e.g., country-by-country reporting).
- Strategic Planning: Partner with tax planning to identify opportunities to optimize the company’s global tax position (e.g. FTC limitation, tested losses).
- Team Leadership: Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing tax operations team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Process Optimization: Drive efficiencies in tax operations through technology, automation, and best practices, enhancing accuracy and scalability.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including finance, treasury, and accounting, as well as external advisors, to support company-wide objectives.
Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or advanced degree (e.g., Master’s in Taxation, JD) strongly preferred.
- 15+ years of experience in tax preferred, with at least 5 years in a leadership role overseeing tax compliance and provision processes.
- Expertise in U.S. federal and international tax laws, including US income tax on foreign income (Subpart F, GILTI, Transfer Pricing).
- Proven experience managing tax provisions under ASC 740 and working with financial reporting teams.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a team, with excellent interpersonal, leadership and communication skills.
- Analytical mindset with a track record of solving complex technical and process related issues.
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Prior experience in a publicly traded company or technology/medical device industry is a plus.

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, benefits, and equity. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications. The target salary ranges are listed.
Base Salary Range Region 1: $268.000 USD - $402.000 USD
Base Salary Range Region 2: $227.800 USD - $341.800 USD
Shift: Day
Workplace Type: Set Schedule - This job will be onsite weekly, the percentage of onsite work will be defined by the leader.
