Job Description

Primary Function of Position

The Ion™ endoluminal system is Intuitive's robotic platform for minimally invasive biopsy in the peripheral lung, with an initial goal of improving the early diagnosis of lung cancer.

We are seeking a candidate with an analytical mind, exceptional leadership and software design skills to manage a team who investigates complex design issues, design and implement solutions while committing to the highest product quality and reliability for our robotic platform.

This role works closely with numerous internal teams to ensure designs meet clinical and user needs and perform reliably and effectively in the field. In this position, you will steer a team of talented engineers in a focused, high energy, collaborative work environment, challenged to make sound decisions when faced with the time pressures and ambiguous or incomplete information typical of issue troubleshooting and product development.

Essential Job Duties

  • Build up and guide a team of embedded software developers supporting the Continuous Improvement of the Ion System.
    • Understand and exemplify Intuitive’s culture of first principles thinking and that patients come first, always.
    • Coach, evaluate and give feedback to the team members throughout the year and through annual Performance Review.
    • Work with team members to create long-term development plans.
    • Manage the team’s assignments, priorities and budget annually.
    • Provide guidance through complex situations or conflicting goals.
    • Encourage and participate in design and code reviews.
  • Project management
    • Support continued commercialization of the existing product by ensuring the product meets the highest level of quality through helping cross functional teams with issues emerging from the field, the manufacturing floor or the supply chain.
    • Drive continuous improvement of the existing product by gathering and synthetizing information, formulating and prioritizing long-term projects through planning with leadership from New Product Development, Supplier, Manufacturing, Clinical, Regulatory, Quality, Production, Service Operations, and other groups. Align with cross functional teams to ensure designs provide value to patients, physicians, and hospitals.
    • Drive new SW projects throughout the development lifecycle (from requirements to code, testing and field deployment).
  • Risk management
    • Provide expertise and leadership in maintaining the risk and requirement documentation related to the system.
    • Evaluate inputs coming from the field and the manufacturing floor and escalate/prioritize appropriately.
  • Documentation
    • Drive software release-specific documentation such as regulatory escalations, complaint search and anomalies listings.
    • Provide expertise and leadership in investigating and categorizing software bugs as well as staging fixes in future software patches.
    • Provide expertise and leadership in tracking effectiveness of software patches after deployment to the field.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience

  • Ability to mentor, collaborate, and motivate across functional boundaries with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Experience in all phases of the software life cycle including design, implementation, debug, verification and maintenance.
  • Excellent judgment in the presence of challenging priorities and incomplete data; proven ability to make difficult trade-offs through solid reflection, and focusing on the vital thing, all of which can be taught to other.
  • For me, more about good instincts/thought process for themselves (and something they can train others to do) rather than defining/creating a new semi-formal process.
  • Self-driven desire to excel in a high-energy, detail-oriented, small, focused team environment, to maintain a sound sense of shared responsibility and reward, making work interesting, meaningful, and enjoyable.
  • Expertise in communicating effectively and accurately (written and oral) across all levels and functions, including interacting with suppliers, and presenting to a technical audience.

Required Education and Training

  • Minimum Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field with at least 4+ years experience or Bachelor’s with 6+ years experience

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Good understanding of medical device company and/or robot design.
  • Training or experience in Root Cause Analysis.
