Job Description
Primary Function of Position
Intuitive Surgical, Inc. produces the da Vinci® Surgical System, a minimally invasive robotic surgery system that uses highly complex mechanics, replaceable instruments and accessories, and enhanced three-dimensional visualization to extend surgical technique and precision beyond the limits of the human hand.
The Software Engineer will develop and test new and innovative surgical devices and robotic instrument products for the Intuitive da Vinci Surgical System. He or she must excel in a high-energy team environment and be capable of making sound decisions when faced with the time pressures and incomplete information typical of new product development. The successful candidate must have strong technical depth in relevant areas and have a track record of successful product development efforts.
Essential Job Duties
- Work on Software Engineering problems on cross-functional project teams that design, test and develop next generation surgical devices and robotic instrument products
- Work closely with the hardware, software and system engineering teams to determine best methods to satisfy and verify design requirements and to ensure design outputs are successfully integrated into effective system designs
- Support robotic instrument and generator development & testing across multiple development platforms
- Support robotic instrument and generator development & testing across multiple development platforms
- Develop, implement, test and document solutions for designs according to clinical and market requirements
Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience
- Experience developing complete firmware solutions for embedded systems using C/C++
- Experience with Embedded Systems Development
- Debug software and perform reviews of test automation and application code.
- Assist in analysis of test and field data, identify non-conformance trends, generate concise executive summaries, and recommend design improvements.
- Working knowledge of peripherals commonly used on embedded systems such as ADCs, DACs, PWM and waveform generation and serial communications (I2C, SPI, RS232)
- Experience using electronic bench equipment such as oscilloscopes and function generators for the bring up and troubleshooting of hardware
- Familiarity with software configuration management tools, defect tracking tools and effective peer review techniques
- Ability to communicate effectively (written, oral) across all levels and organizations
University Hiring Program Eligibility Requirements:
- University Enrollment: Must be currently enrolled in and returning to an accredited degree-seeking academic program in the Fall.
- Internship Work Period: Must be available to work full-time (approximately 40 hours per week) during a 10-12 week period starting May or June. Specific start dates are shared during the recruiting process.
Required Education and Training
- Current enrollment in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, or related degree-seeking program at the Master’s level. Bachelor’s level students would also be considered based on specific relevant experience.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience with Verilog or other Hardware description language
- Experience with Python
- Knowledge of Electrical Theory in relation to the ability to understand the schematics and datasheets of different components
- Knowledge of Control Systems

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay (paid at an hourly rate), benefits, and a housing allowance. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including relevant skills and experience for this internship, degree-seeking academic program (PhD, Master’s, Bachelor’s, etc), year in school, and location. The hourly rate is prorated against the intern program salaries listed and total program compensation will be based on internship duration.
Base Salary Range Region 1: $60.320 USD - $95.680 USD
Base Salary Range Region 2: $52.000 USD - $81.120 USD

Travel: 10% of the time
