Job Description

Primary Function of Position:

The Sr. Design Engineer will develop and support innovative surgical devices and accessories for the da Vinci Surgical System, from concept to launch and beyond, with shared responsibility and shared reward. The successful candidate will understand user needs and requirements, balance individual product-level requirements with system-level requirements, resolve complex mechanical design issues, and commit to the highest product quality.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Serve as lead technical designer on cross-functional project teams to develop new, world-class surgical devices and accessories:
    • Translate clinical requirements and user needs to functional and technical specifications.
    • Develop, implement, test, and document solutions that meet clinical requirements.
    • Work within multi-disciplinary teams to define requirements for new and current designs.
    • Perform risk analysis; develop design requirements; reduce to practice, document, and test designs according to corporate standard and departmental operating procedures, including stringent Design Control activities.
    • Create and maintain engineering drawings to company and international drafting standards (ISO standards vs. MIL standards).
    • Test designs according to corporate standard and departmental operating procedures.
    • Create intellectual property by brainstorming novel concepts, writing invention disclosures, and creating rapid prototypes.
    • Lead technical design reviews and present technical details to cross-departmental group.
    • Give guidance / instructions and technical advice to other mechanical engineers.
    • Act as trainer for Junior Mechanical Design engineers and Technical Product Designers.
  • Independent and efficient work style, versatility, and flexibility.
  • Compliance with the current QMS, DOPs and SOPs and the safety regulations.
  • Collaboration and support the quality and regulatory processes.
  • Collaboration on the determination of future product release content with all relevant departments.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • M.Eng. / M.Sc. with at least 5 years of industry experience in designing mechanical products in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering,
    • B.Eng./B.Sc. / Certified Technician with at least 8 years of industry experience or equivalent experience.
  • A passion for solving tough technical problems and creating elegant and reliable products.
  • Experience in thinking at a systems level, interfacing between multiple design groups, and negotiating conflicting requirements.
  • Hands-on, self-driven engineer with the proven ability to work well in a multi-cultural team environment, including team members in remote locations. Must be able to communicate effectively and accurately (written and oral) across all levels and functions, including presenting to a technical audience.
  • Demonstrated strength in mechanical design and analytical methods, including statics, strength of materials. Familiarity with statistics and design of experiments and stress analyze (FEA).
  • Experience creating mock-ups and evaluating designs via testing and rigorous mathematical analysis.
  • Proficiency using CAD to design parts and assemblies; Solidworks preferred.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, such as injection molding, thermoforming, machining, plating, heat treatment, pad printing, laser marking, laser welding, ultrasonic welding, heat staking, etc. preferred.
  • Experience in mentoring other engineers.
  • Experience with UL, CE, and/or FDA requirements preferred.
  • Extensive experience designing for reliability and manufacturability.
  • Experience with sterilization processes and designing for biocompatibility preferred.
  • Proficiency written and spoken German language skills.
  • Proficiency English spoken and written skills.
  • Willingness to international travel up to 10%.
